Jesus … the Light of the World

The Advent wreath’s fifth and final candle, the Christ candle, is lit at Christmas to celebrate Jesus’ purity, His birth, the first coming of the Messiah, and the joy felt on Christmas Day. The bright light and largest candle is white, and represents the Light of the World.

John 1:4-5 The Message

Everything was created through him;
nothing—not one thing!
came into being without him.
What came into existence was Life,
and the Life was Light to live by.
The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness;
the darkness couldn’t put it out.

Isaiah 42:16 God’s Word Translation

I will lead the blind on unfamiliar roads.
I will lead them on unfamiliar paths.
I will turn darkness into light in front of them.
I will make rough places smooth.
These are the things I will do for them,
and I will never abandon them.

John 8:12 Easy-to-Read Version

Later, Jesus talked to the people again. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never live in darkness. They will have the light that gives life.”

Light gives of itself freely, filling all available space.  It does not seek anything in return; it asks not whether you are friend or foe.  It gives of itself and is not thereby diminished.  ~Michael Strassfeld

There are two ways of spreading light; to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.  ~Edith Wharton

Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.  ~Anthony J. D’Angelo

A Christmas Eve tradition growing up, was to pile in the car after Christmas Eve Services, and travel through our neighborhoods looking at the lights on the houses. We all loved seeing the many colored lights and being surprised and happy to see the many different ways people, ‘Let Their lights Shine Forth’.

Why do people always smile at me, I ask myself. Wherever I go smiles follow me. I assume it is because I always try to catch someone’s eye and greet them with a smile and a, “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” or “Hello!”

I’ve had people comment on my smile. It isn’t something I make an effort to do … it just naturally springs forth on my face and I can feel the light shine from my eyes. I’m not trying to brag … it is part of who I am. I’m a hugger, too! Before I know it, my arms reach out to family, friends, and even strangers; my hugs are the embracing bear type hug. I get so much love back from those hugs. They are healing for me.

I emote. My emotions, feelings, love, just seep out unannounced and unguarded. It is a character trait for which I am most proud! I give of myself, and in return, almost always I get a smile or a hug back. Many times, before the smile lights the face of whoever I’ve shared a smile, comes a slight happy recognition of surprise, that I have passed on my smile to them. I hope they pass the smile they’ve received on to another.  :  )

This Christmas I have ordered a chocolate layer cake with, Happy Birthday, Jesus, written on the cake. I plan to light one birthday candle. I’ve never done this before. I hope it will help center me; a tangible, edible, symbol of the reason we celebrate Christmas.

Heavenly Father, Giver of Light, Thank You for sending Your Son to teach us how to live our lives in love, in light, and in Thanksgiving for all Your Many Blessings.  Amen
