O Christmas Tree

Written by Ernst Anschütz in 1824

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
Not only green when summer’s here,
But also when ’tis cold and drear.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can’st give me;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can’st give me;
How often has the Christmas tree
Afforded me the greatest glee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can’st give me.

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!
From base to summit, gay and bright,
There’s only splendor for the sight.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!
Thou bidst us true and faithful be,
And trust in God unchangingly.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!

We purchased our tree today. A six-foot slim tree suits the space and is easier for me to reach to decorate. I purchased new Shiny Brite ornaments. About two inches in diameter and true to their name, are shiny colors of red, green, purple, yellow, silver, and white. I have a nativity scene with felt stuffed characters we placed neatly tucked between the evergreen branches. Collected over the last several years, I have many colors and shapes of chandelier prisms. Hung in front of the tree lights the crystals come to life.

For thirty-two years of marriage, I have hung the lights and decorated the tree all by myself. It just worked out that way. I am a perfectionist, and my husband’s talents lie in the automotive/handy-man/electrician/plumber field of expertise. I enjoy the creative process of starting with the lights, then placing the ornaments and crystal prisms evenly spaced and within complimentary color patterns. Sitting back after my efforts, my mind wanders as I listen to Christmas Carols and allow my eyes to evaluate my creation.

I am not sure how or why the tree became one of the important symbols of the Christmas Season, but, for me, it provides wonder and awe through color and light. I am able to spend quiet moments of reflection as I gaze at the tree. Quiet peaceful moments are rare during the busy holiday season. Maybe that is reason enough to place this fragrant fir within our homes … it delights all our senses.

Thank you, Dear Lord, that my family has always been able to afford and adorn Christmas Trees every year … trees that provide my heart, soul, and mind with childlike joy!  Amen
