The Key

Swinging those keys up and out

the coach telegraphed his power

as they jangled

a warning before he ever appeared

my own set of keys hooked

to my belt loop

felt heavy,

the weight of responsibility

plans, deadlines, motivation

for the unmotivated

that I do not miss

begging young students

to

have

fun

their blank stares frightened me

what future disasters

are written upon faces

that hold no love,

no hate,

no fear,

nothing

no, I haven’t given up

on the young people of today

behind those blank stares

are sparks of life

ready

willing

and able

to enjoy childhood

to run, jump, skip, hop

laugh till it hurts

and cry till all is well

I’ve seen the transformation

heard the surprised giggle

observed help for those in need

watched pats on the back

witnessed words of encouragement

been amazed at abilities no one else

had ever seen

or imagined

given the chance to excel

given the freedom to choose

given the support required

nothing is impossible

Dear Lord, You have watched,

supported,

freed,

enabled

transformation in me

not a student in school

this child of Yours that may never grow up

but for whom You will forever be

present

nothing is impossible for YOU

believing, trusting, having faith,

letting go,

changing,

maturing,

transforming

is not impossible for ME

because You, Emmanuel,

are God With Us

with me

All Glory,

Power,

Honor,

and Praise to You, Heavenly Father,

Creator,

Provider,

Healer,

Teacher,

Way-Shower,

Counselor,

Friend.

A hymn I have never heard, but whose words are so very true.

Nothing Is Impossible

by Eugene L. Clark 1964

I read in the Bible the promise of God,

That nothing for Him is too hard;

Impossible things He has promised to do,

If we faithfully trust in His Word.

Nothing is impossible

when you put your trust in God;

Nothing is impossible

when you’re trusting in His Word.

Hearken to the voice of God to thee:

“Is there anything too hard for Me?”

Then put your trust in God alone

and rest upon His Word–

For ev’rything, O ev’rything,

Yes, ev’rything is possible with God!

The word of the Lord is an anchor secure,

When winds of uncertainty blow:

Though man in his weakness may falter and fail,

His Word will not fail us we know.

Nothing is impossible

when you put your trust in God;

Nothing is impossible

when you’re trusting in His Word.

Hearken to the voice of God to thee:

“Is there anything too hard for Me?”

Then put your trust in God alone

and rest upon His Word–

For ev’rything, O ev’rything,

Yes, ev’rything is possible with God!

All things are possible, this is His Word,

Receive it ‘tis written for you,

Believe in His promises, God cannot fail,

For what He has said He will do.

Nothing is impossible

when you put your trust in God;

Nothing is impossible

when you’re trusting in His Word.

Hearken to the voice of God to thee:

“Is there anything too hard for Me?”

Then put your trust in God alone

and rest upon His Word–

For ev’rything, O ev’rything,

Yes, ev’rything is possible with God!

  1. Jan , wonderfully write. A teacher, unaware of the gift they are to those they teach. Underappreciated, underpaid and over works. Until it come to their students, kinder eye’s to senior smile they know the true value of their teacher, priceless.

  2. Yes, priceless … what I didn’t say was how much their lives touched mine over the years. Their innocence, smiles, laughter, successes, filled my life when I needed support myself … priceless. Thanks, Mel. In the world of education yourself, you saw what I saw … and you filled the needs of students in need of your senior wisdom. Thanks my friend. jan
