Family Blessings

He answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear and do what God’s Word says.” Luke 8:21  God’s Word Translation

He replied to the man speaking to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Matthew 12:48  God’s Word Translation

For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Matthew 12:50  New International Version

Dysfunction is a common symptom within family relationships. Family is a term with many meanings. Jesus offered these words about family.

Mark 6:4-6  The Message
Jesus told them, “A prophet has little honor in his hometown, among his relatives, on the streets he played in as a child.” Jesus wasn’t able to do much of anything there—he laid hands on a few sick people and healed them, that’s all. He couldn’t get over their stubbornness. He left and made a circuit of the other villages, teaching.

Here are other’s thoughts about family.

“Family quarrels are bitter things. They don’t go according to any rules. They’re not like aches or wounds, they’re more like splits in the skin that won’t heal because there’s not enough material.”
– F. Scott Fitzgerald

“At the end of the day, a loving family should find everything forgivable.”– Mark V. Olsen

“There’s nothing that makes you more insane than family. Or more happy. Or more exasperated. Or more… secure.”– Jim Butcher

“Siblings: children of the same parents, each of whom is perfectly normal until they get together.”– Sam Levenson

“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”– Leo Tolstoy

“That’s what people do who love you. They put their arms around you and love you when you’re not so lovable.”– Deb Caletti

“A man should never neglect his family for business.”– Walt Disney

“One’s family is the most important thing in life. I look at it this way: One of these days I’ll be over in a hospital somewhere with four walls around me. And the only people who’ll be with me will be my family.”– Robert Byrd

For over thirty years my husband and I have had a circle of friends; we celebrate birthdays, Christmas, births, and just the joy of being together. We also comfort each other through sickness and the death of loved ones. We choose to be together; we choose to spend time with each other; we choose to be an active part of each other’s lives; we are family. I thank You, Dear Lord, for this family of mine; they are loving blessings; they are love in action.

I most recently found myself surrounded by women spiritually grounded; women who welcomed me into their fold; women whose strong faith in You, Father, shines bright; a light I needed; a family You formed, personalities specifically selected as their needs others understand, empathize, and have survived.

Thank You, Most Gracious Lord, for arranging a place for me at the table with these precious women to share my faith, my struggles, my thanks, my blessings; a family You chose for me; a family my heart has longed for; a family that immediately adopted me as their own. Amen

Blest Be the Tie That Binds

Text: John Fawcett, 1740-1817
Music: Johann G. Nageli, 1768-1836;  arranged by Lowell Mason, 1792-1872

Blest be the tie that binds
our hearts in Christian love;
the fellowship of kindred minds
is like to that above.

Before our Father’s throne
we pour our ardent prayers;
our fears, our hopes, our aims are one,
our comforts and our cares.

We share each other’s woes,
our mutual burdens bear;
and often for each other flows
the sympathizing tear.

When we asunder part,
it gives us inward pain;
but we shall still be joined in heart,
and hope to meet again.

The Family of God

I’m so glad I’m a part of the Family of God,
I’ve been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood!
Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod,
For I’m part of the family,
The Family of God.

You will notice we say “brother and sister” ’round here,
It’s because we’re a family and these are so near;
When one has a heartache, we all share the tears,
And rejoice in each victory in this family so dear.

I’m so glad I’m a part of the Family of God,
I’ve been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood!
Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod,
For I’m part of the family,
The Family of God.

From the door of an orphanage to the house of the King,
No longer an outcast, a new song I sing;
From rags unto riches, from the weak to the strong,
I’m not worthy to be here, but praise God I belong!

I’m so glad I’m a part of the Family of God,
I’ve been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His Blood!
Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod,
For I’m part of the family,
The Family of God.
