Get Back … Get Back … Get Back to Where You Once Belonged !!

Didn’t you ever wonder why older folk sat around swapping body misery stories? I did; now I don’t! I’ve reached the age where my body is not working as well as it used to. Aches from arthritis and lower back aches have me focused on pain and relieving that pain. Yes, working through the pain is one way; stretching is another way; pain meds are another way; and my new favorite, grumbling, growling, and complaining-I’ve become an old coot-ess!

I want to get back to where I once belonged, to where I could do most anything I wanted, to shake off injuries and bounce back good as new! Time and wear and tear affect even the most active-which I was -which I am! Desire and reality are in a constant battle now.

Retired with time to do what I please, when I please is a race against the aging process. Bummer! Dear Lord, there is so much I want to do! I long to discover new vistas, new experiences, new ways to know, learn, and ponder the awesomeness that is Your Magnificent Creation-life in all it’s many forms! Awesomeness is a word so overused; yet as close as I can get to describe who You are, what You are, how You create!

Bless me, Dear Lord, with the ability to gracefully age. I can only ask for a delay in my aging process; I can ask that You grant me peace to endure what I must, and the strength to stay in the race! I ask this selfishly, I must admit; but I also don’t want to leave this world without praising Your works and thanking You for the privilege to see, hear, taste, and touch much of it.

Thank You, Heavenly Father, for the good health I have had thus far. Thank You, for the countless opportunities I have had to appreciate, love, and honor the life I’ve been given. Thank You, that I can enjoy cool breezes, birdsong, rain showers, and countless memories that take me back to where I once belonged; thank You for the assurance that my future holds the promise of everlasting life experiences I can only imagine!

A gray head is a crown of glory; It is found in the way of righteousness.  Proverbs 16:31

Even to your old age I will be the same, And even to your graying years I will bear you! I have done it, and I will carry you; And I will bear you and I will deliver you.  Isaiah 46:4

Never ask “Why does the past seem so much better than now?”  because this question does not come from wisdom.  Ecclesiastes 7:10

That is why we are not discouraged. Though outwardly we are wearing out, inwardly we are renewed day by day. Our suffering is light and temporary and is producing for us an eternal glory that is greater than anything we can imagine.  2 Corinthians 4:16-17

Allow me to be a bit silly; I thought of this old song.

The Old Gray Mare    an old Folk Song

The old gray mare,
She ain’t what she used to be
Ain’t what she used to be,
Ain’t what she used to be
The old gray mare,
She ain’t what she used to be
Many long years ago.

Many long years ago,
Many long years ago,
The old gray mare,
She ain’t what she used to be
Many long years ago.

The old gray mare,
She kicked on the whiffletree,
Kicked on the whiffletree,
Kicked on the whiffletree
The old gray mare,
She kicked on the whiffletree
Many long years ago.

Many long years ago,
Many long years ago,
The old gray mare,
She kicked on the whiffletree
Many long years ago.

A whiffletree I learned was a mechanism that linked traces, a long strong chain to a draft or working horse. Even relegated to pulling a load, the horse or other domesticated animal still had the energy to buck or kick.

  1. Had lunch with my longtime friend , Pat Smart and we were discussing the same thing , our aging bodies and how they were letting us down ! In our 20 s& 30 s we played hours of tennis every week , then into our 40s with school and careers and we both took up golf ! She took up running and ran in NY Marathon ! We remember the days of physical glory , slim flexible bodies !!!and now dealing with knees , backs and Arthur ! It’s a cruel joke, this aging thing !
