Play Mates

I’ve learned, well am learning, a new game called Pickleball. It is a cross between badminton, ping-pong, and tennis, sort of. Yet, it is a game with rules all its own. It is played on a court the width of a basketball court; we can get three courts going at the same time. There is a net about the same height of a tennis net, but strokes tennis strength and length are most definitely out-of-bounds. I never played tennis or badminton; I did play ping-pong regularly on a board Daddy put in our garage in Columbia, the Capital City, as Mother called it. Daddy loved beating us girls, though, in doing so, we became quite good at the game. I remember how much he smiled and laughed when we played. I’ve inherited his love of competing in this new game, Pickleball.

I am sure I go overboard, as I am wont to do, with my celebratory gestures, and shouts of pure joy; yet I have also won compliments on my enthusiasm! I am fun to play with, if I do say so myself! New friends I’ve made; new names to learn; new asides to share; new thanks for those who have helped and encouraged me-no matter how many shots I miss! We all love it for the exercise but most importantly for the fun! Smiling and laughter reign for two hours twice a week!

One particular new friend joins me in giggling and rolling our eyes at each other no matter whether we are on the same team or not! We are a team! She got hit in the mouth the other week, and I alerted one of the guys and asked him to find some ice for her; he did; we look out for each other; we are new friends!

Not one to have ever played sports in school, I am new to the fun of camaraderie! What a blessing to learn in my sixtieth year! Retirement has brought Pickleball into my life; a joy it has been!

Thank You, Dear Lord, for the gift of play at this age! My exercise was limited to gardening, walking, and housework; I do love gardening and long walks, housework is necessary, but I am thrilled and elated with playing again! Returning to childlike play for the pure fun of it is exhilarating! Thank You, Dear Heavenly Father, for knowing what was best for me, Your child-play!

Psalms 47:1  Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy!

I Have That Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy Down in My Heart

Author: George W. Cooke  (April 1848 – April 1923)

I’ve got that joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart,
down in my heart, down in my heart!
I’ve got that joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart,
down in my heart to stay!

And I’m so happy, so very happy.
I got a love of Jesus in my heart.
And I’m so happy, so very happy.
I got a love of Jesus in my heart.

I’ve got the love of Jesus, love of Jesus, down in my heart!
Down in my heart! Down in my heart!
I’ve got the love of Jesus, love of Jesus, down in my heart!
Down in my heart to stay.

I’ve got a peace that passeth understanding
Down in my heart! Down in my heart! Down in my heart!
I’ve got the peace that passeth understanding down in my heart!
Down in my heart to stay.
