Silent No More

I have been sitting silently by and letting others have their say about politics-no more. I will no longer sit by and not stand up for my belief in You, Dear Lord-no more. My days of letting others’ opinions dominate the conversation are-no more. If I don’t believe what others are spouting, I will speak up and make my own statements. If we as Christians don’t learn how to do that, we will be sitting by in the end days and watching the world blaspheme Your name and Your Word. Uh … that is already happening … in our country … in our courts … in our conversations with others.

I don’t want to set out to aggravate any conversation; I don’t want to overstep my bounds; I don’t want to become close-minded; but I will not sit by silently anymore.

There, I have said what I have felt in my heart for a long, long time. In my teaching professional career, there were rules of what could and could not be said. In order to keep my job I followed those rules. Thankfully, I live in the south and there was wiggle room. Sadly, that wiggle room shrank tremendously in my thirty-seven years serving the children of my state.

The question I have, Dear Lord, is how to stand up for my political and religious beliefs and do it in a way that You would have me behave. I don’t know. I have never lived in a society that is as divided as ours is now. My early childhood was in the United State of the late 50’s and 60’s. Yes, it was a period of violent race relations, however, I was reared in a home free of racial prejudice. My grandfather was a different story. Hearing him taught me how not to think and speak ill of others-red, yellow, black, and white.

Now, our world is a scary place. Our world is more connected. Transportation, communication, and innovation have brought other cultures into daily contact. This closeness has not brought understanding, but upset, hate, and wars; wars we fight on invisible battlefields; wars we fight against invisible soldiers wielding terror and death to all in their paths. It’s a scary world.

Please show me, Dear Lord, in Your Word-the Truth, the Way, and the Paths to take in the deadly mind fields (mind not a typo) through which we are all blindly walking.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel. Philippians 1:27

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”  John 14:6

Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lordwill fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” Exodus 14:13-14

Take courage and be men, O Philistines, or you will become slaves to the Hebrews, as they have been slaves to you; therefore, be men and fight. 1 Samuel 4:9

Be strong, and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God; and may the LORD do what is good in His sight. 2 Samuel 10:12

Be strong and let your heart take courage, All you who hope in the Lord. Psalm 31:24

Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day on which your Lord will come. Matthew 24:42

Now brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, and in which you stand firm. 1 Corinthians 15:1

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1

I pray that out of the riches of His glory, He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being. Ephesians 3:16

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Ephesians 6:10

Nevertheless, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending side by side for the faith of the gospel. Philippians 1:27

Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how you must stand firm in the Lord, my beloved. Philippians 4:1

Onward, Christian Soldiers

Text: Sabine Baring-Gould, 1834-1924
Music: Arthur S. Sullivan, 1842-1900

Onward, Christian soldiers,
marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
going on before!
Christ, the royal Master,
leads again the foe;
Forward into battle,
see His banner go!

Onward, Christian soldiers,
marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
going on before!

At the sign of triumph
Satan’s host doth flee;
On, then, Christian soldiers,
on to victory!
Hell’s foundations quiver
at the shout of praise;
Brothers, lift your voices,
loud your anthems raise! [Refrain]

Like a mighty army
moves the church of God;
Brothers, we are treading
where the saints have trod;
We are not divided;
all one body we,
One in hope and doctrine,
one in charity. [Refrain]

Onward, then, ye people,
join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices
in the triumph song;
Glory, laud, and honor,
unto Christ the King;
This thro’ countless ages
men and angels sing. [Refrain]
